2016 Thru-Hike Gear – The Big 4

The Big 4, pack, tent or hammock, sleeping pad, and sleeping bag. Some try to get the total weight of these items to under 7 or 8 pounds. My Big 4 comes in at 11 pounds, when I include a sleeping bag liners.

Here’s my Big 4:

Osprey Exos 58 – 2.5 pounds
ENO DoubleNest Hammock – 1 lb. 3 oz.
ENO Blaze Underquilt – 1 lb. 8 oz.
ENO Atlas Straps – 11 oz.
ENO Pro Rainfly – 1 lb. 6 oz.
REI Igneo 19 Degree Sleeping Bag – 1 lb. 13 oz.
Sea-to-Summit  Therolite Reactor Plus – 10 oz
Cocoon Hood Pillow – 4 oz.
6 MSR Ground Hog Stakes – 6 oz.

Total Weight = 10.3 pounds

My luggage scale reads 11 pounds even when these items are all packed. I’m chalking up the .7 lb, or 9 oz. to carabiners, and companies being “optimistic” when listing weight specs.
